This project was adopted by the Rotary Club of Templestowe (RCT) in September 2011, with the Rotary Club of Taveuni Island as host club for the project.
By June 2012, RCT had found sponsors for 44 children to attend the Lavena Primary School on Taveuni Island. A Gala Dinner in June 2102 also raised over $8,800 to help pay for a new pre-school. The remainder of the building costs were provided by Deakin University and through the fundraising efforts of the 9 Deakin Uni. Global Citizenship Program students who volunteered to spend three weeks at Lavena helping ABCD and Rotary volunteers with the building work, teaching the children and painting some beautiful murals on the finished pre-school. A contribution for Rotary District 9810 plus a matching grant from the Rotary Foundation completed the fit-out of the preschool with new furniture and learning materials.
May 2013 saw the second Lavena Gala Dinner take place where all the 44 sponsorships were renewed for a further year. Nine of the Lavena Primary School students had graduated to various high schools on Taveuni at the end of 2012, a success story that may not have been possible without the generosity of the sponsors!
A further $5,000 was raised to go towards the installation of solar power for the primary school, the pre-school and the teachers quarters. Funds carried over from last year and a massive contribution of $5,000 from the Rotary Club of Manningham and a philanthropic trust has resulted in RCT reaching the target of the $17,000 required for the solar power installation to be completed in late 2013.
